While the options for entertainment are vast, one stop visitors simply won’t want to leave off their itinerary is Gatlinburg Skylift Park. This family-friendly attraction has played a big role in the area’s history, and today, it continues to be a fascinating place to enhance an unforgettable trip this way.
An Integral Part of Gatlinburg History
The origins of Gatlinburg Skylift Park date back to 1953 when an innkeeper by the name of Rel Maples was inspired to build a chairlift that could take him up the mountain just behind his Gatlinburg property. He reached out to Everett Kircher and together, the two put together a plan to build and construct the chairlift that Kircher would operate. Little did they know it would become a sightseeing icon in the area. The original lift was designed using a ski lift from Sugar Bowl Ski Area in California which was dismantled and restructured to fit its new purposes. By 1954 the chairlift was complete and open for business. It didn’t take long to become a popular stop among locals and visitors alike. Over the years, the lift was paired up with other attractions which together, make up the greater Gatlinburg Skylift Park. The additions keep coming and in 2019, the park enjoyed the opening of the Gatlinburg SkyBridge.
